Most of us can are limited to placing the subwoofer in one place, but if you have the freedom, measure the sub in different places to see what position provides the best performance.
A good place to start is in a corner, and let your AV receiver set it up with its auto-setup software using its microphone. If you have access to the results of the setup, look out for big dips in the bass response, and try and find a position that helps reduce that dip - don't worry about the big peaks, the receiver's software will chop those off, but it can't fill the dips, hence trying to reduce that dip naturally.
